Starting an Internet Home Business? Avoid These Common Mistakes

by Derek Gehl

Most internet home business entrepreneurs fail when they start their internet business because they make one large error.

Entrepreneurs find a product to sell on the internet before researching the market potential (also their profit potential)

Internet home business entrepreneurs need to find a niche market looking for their product before they decide on a product to sell online.

Once they think they have a profitable business idea for their niche market, market research must be done to ensure this is really the case.

To avoid this fatal mistake follow these three simple steps.

Step #1: Make a list of your interests and passions

Entrepreneurs who start home Internet businesses based on their own knowledge, experience, and expertise are far more likely to be successful.

After all, if you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, you simply won’t find it as enjoyable — and you’ll be less motivated to stick with your business and do the work necessary to grow and improve it. So before you even begin to find an untapped niche of hungry customers, you should brainstorm your interests and passions… and let them guide you!

You can find unique skills a variety of ways. Knowing how to pass the exam required to be a paramedic is a skill on which an internet business could be started. Think of your own unique experiences. Maybe you collect stamps or sew quilts – these are all examples of unique niche markets.

A list is a great place to get started – write down all of your unique experiences, careers, passions, interests and any life challenge you have overcome.

Once you have your list narrowed down to a few areas that are of most interest to you, you are ready start your market research.

Step #2: Finding your niche

When it comes to finding a niche market, you’ve got to think small if you want to find big profit potential.

A small, untapped and specialized niche market can be the source of big revenie online.

On the Internet, a niche market is a group of people who are searching to solve a common problem but not finding many (or any) relevant results.

Most people go online to find useful information to help solve a problem, not to buy (at least right away).

The basis for your successful internet home business will be when you find the group of people who are looking to solve the same problem without much luck. This will be your “hidden treasure”.

If you start with a big, broad market you will likely find it full of competitors. You need to think small.

So be patient and explore all the possible avenues. You’ve got to drill down, down, and down again — until you finally strike gold!

How do you find these markets?

Use a keyword research tool like BeBiz.com and you kind find out exactly what people are searching for online – are people looking for your potential product? If so, you now need to think of a way to sell the niche what they are looking for.

By starting your internet home business this way you will know there is a pocket of eager customers who need your product…even before you spend any time or money creating the actual product! You next need to validate your market before rushing off to create the next hot product.

Step #3: Validating a market

Validating your market means confirming it has profit potential. In other words, can you actually make money from it?

To find out, ask yourself these four key questions:

1. Is the market easily defined and reachable? Most potential markets will already have places where they congregate. Online groups, forums, discussion boards, clubs, and special websites will give you the opportunity to analyze who exactly your potential customers are.

Find out who your potential customer is and you will have a better idea of whether or not they will buy from you.

2. Is the market small enough so there aren’t many competitors, but big enough to be profitable?

If you find there are lots of well established, well funded and well supplied competitors in your market…get out! You want to find a small pond but it needs enough fish to make your efforts profitable. If there are too many competitors keep looking for a more precise and smaller market.

3. Do your potential customers have money… and are they willing to spend it?

You need to know if these people actually buy stuff… so it’s a good sign if there’s some competition already selling products to the market. You’ll have a much harder job selling to people if there are too many free products or free sites available.

4. Are they passionate enough about the problem they’re trying to solve that they’re willing to spend money on your product?

You want a potential market that is so passionate about their interest that they eat, sleep and breath it. They will want ALL the information they can get on the subject.

Think about quilters or stamp collectors…their obsessive interest is a large reason those markets are so profitable.

Take away

It’s essential you follow these three steps when you start an internet home business. If you can find a niche market based on your interests, you’ll be able to create a business you’re passionate about. And if you validate your market before you create a product, you can be confident your business will be profitable.

It’s a simple, but effective, formula and it will set you on the road to internet business success.
